Phuket’s biggest stories from last week: Bangla Road back to life again, PM Prayut visiting Phuket, mask mandate flip flopping and more

The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area Phuket, from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, May 30th, 2022, to Sunday, June 5th, 2022.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

  1. Bangla Road in Patong once again was full of tourists, according to Patong officials, as entertainment venues were legally opened on June 1st, 2022 after being closed since April of 2021 and turned into converted restaurants previously.                                                                                                   Weerawit Krueasombat, the president of the Patong Entertainment Business Association, told The Phuket Express, “we are still worried about the closing times and want them moved from midnight to at least 2 am, preferably 4 am.”

The Phuket Governor on May 31st, 2022 released new Covid-19 related orders officially allowing entertainment venues to open until midnight from June 1st., 2022.

2. The Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha will visit Phuket today June 6th, 2022 for the Thailand Tourism Congress 2022.

Phuket is hosting another big tourism event this month from June 6th to June 8th, 2022.

From 2:45 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Prayut will lead the opening of the Thailand Tourism Congress 2022 at the Beyond Resort Kata.

3. The Phuket governor on June 2nd, 2022 has canceled an order allowing relaxed outdoor usage of masks at places such as beaches and parks to requiring that one MUST wear masks at all public spaces, even if apart from other people.

The exception in the previous order which stated “At beaches, public parks, and sports stadiums with two meters distance from others.” has been removed.

Previously the Phuket Governor on May 31st issued an order regarding the current face mask mandate.

4. An autopsy is set to be performed to determine the cause of death of a Russian woman who fell from a condominium in Patong on May 31st.

The Phuket Provincial Police Commander Major General Sermphan Sirikong told The Phuket Express, “We have tried to question the three other foreigners but they did not cooperate well. We have to wait for the autopsy result as evidence at the scene to conclude what happened to the Russian woman.”

The Royal Thai Police Deputy Police Spokesman is asking the public to follow updates from official sources only regarding a Russian woman who fell to her death from a condominium in Patong last week.

5. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that this year’s edition of Thailand’s leading B2B travel industry show, the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2022, will take place on the beautiful island of Phuket from 8-10 June.

The TTM+ 2022 will be held at the spectacular venue of the Angsana Laguna Phuket beachfront resort set within the world-renowned integrated resort of the Laguna Phuket. 

6. A drug suspect who allegedly tried to escape from Rawai law enforcement has been arrested with two methamphetamine pills after police shot out one of the suspect’s vehicle’s tires on a busy road in the Rawai sub-district, Mueang Phuket district Friday afternoon (June 3rd).

  Luckily, nobody was injured.
