Thalang –

A leatherback sea turtle mother laid eggs on a beach near the Phuket International Airport on Monday (March 11th).

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) told the Phuket Express that at 6:50 A.M. on the day in question they were notified by locals in the Mai Khao sub-district that they had found the tracks of a mother sea turtle laying eggs on the Mai Khao Beach at the plane spotting landmark area.

The DMCR arrived at the beach to find the tracks of a mother leatherback sea turtle 190 centimeters wide. Inside the nest were leatherback sea turtle eggs.

The area was not affected by seawater or poor weather and the nest is being protected and monitored until the eggs hatch by the relevant authorities. The number of eggs were not counted. The DMCR stated that the baby sea turtles should hatch in about 60 days.
