A leatherback sea turtle laid eggs on a beach in Thalang which is the first leatherback sea turtle nest in Phuket this year.
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) told the Phuket Express that on Wednesday (February 14th) they were notified by hotel staff in the Mai Khao sub-district that they had found the tracks of a sea turtle laying eggs on Mai Khao Beach.
The DMCR arrived at the beach to find the tracks of a mother leatherback sea turtle approximately 2 meters wide. The turtle’s nest was found to contain leatherback sea turtle eggs.
The area was not affected by seawater or poor weather and the nest is being protected and monitored until the eggs hatch by the relevant authorities. The number of eggs were not counted. The DMCR stated that the baby sea turtles should hatch in about 60 days.
