Phuket’s Biggest Stories from the Past Week: Chinese arriving, Uzbek arrested with 2.23 kg of Cocaine, and more

We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in the Phuket province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, January 16th, 2023, to Sunday, January 22nd, 2023.

  1. A tragic true love story ‘Sarasin Bridge Love Story’ between Dum and Giw has been turned into a brand new film.

A man named ‘Dum’ who was a Baht bus driver and a woman named ‘Giw’ who was a teacher were lovers. Western readers will recognize similar themes to Romeo and Juliet.

2. A Singaporean wanted suspect was arrested at the Phuket International Airport for allegedly being involved in a Ponzi scam.

Mr. Daryl Cai Yonghui, 32, a Singaporean national, was on the wanted list of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). Almost 10,000 Thais filed complaints over this Ponzi scam.

3. A 47-year-old Romanian diver is still missing for 15 days now. Overall Search Ended

The wider search ended and moved to local fishermen and residents to help continue searching for him.

4. In total 182 Chinese tourists arrived at the Phuket International Airport on Wednesday (January 18th), 2023.

The first group of Chinese tourists landed at the airport in a direct flight from Spring Airlines from Shanghai to Phuket.

5. An Uzbek woman has been arrested with 2.23 kilograms of cocaine at the Phuket International Airport.

Mrs. Shoira Rakmonova, 41, Uzbek national was arrested at Thai Customs (import) in the international terminal. Seized from her were eight bags of cocaine weighing in total 2.23 kilograms.
