Two People Die, Ten Injured after Pickup Truck Overturns and Strikes Motorbike in Kathu

Two people were pronounced dead while ten people sustained various injuries after a pickup truck overturned before sweeping away a motorbike in Kathu on Tuesday (May 7th).

Emergency responders were notified of the accident at 6:30 P.M. on the Wichit Songkram Road (Kathu – Patong Road) near a tiger farm in Kathu.

They and the Phuket Express arrived at the scene to find the overturned pickup truck and the damaged motorbike. A Thai couple on the motorbike were provided CPR at the scene before they were later pronounced dead. They were identified as Mr. Udom Hatsoi, 61, and Mrs. Khwaunta Hatsoi, 53, both were from Phuket.

Nine Myanmar workers in the pickup truck sustained various injuries. They were rushed to a local hospital. The pickup trick driver, Mr. Montri Sangnak, 46, was not injured. He claimed that he was driving at 60 kilometers per hour when there was a little rain on the wet road. He lost control of the pickup truck at a curve.

Witnesses told the Phuket Express that the pickup truck lost control from the other lane (Patong- Kathu Road) before it crossed the central reservation and struck the motorbike.

The Kathu Police Chief Colonel Roongrat Rattanapakdee told the Phuket Express that the pickup truck driver is facing charges of causing death by reckless driving.
