Seventy Tourists Rescued Before Ferry Sinks Near Islands in Surat Thani

About seventy tourists were evacuated after water leaked into a night ferry before it eventually sank near Ang Thong Islands.

The Bo Phut Police Chief Colonel Denduang Thongsrisuk told the Phuket Express that on Friday (December 22nd) in the morning, they were notified from a night ferry of the incident while the ferry was traveling from Surat Thani to Turtle Island (Koh Tao).

When the ferry arrived near the Ang Thong Island, water began leaking into the ferry after strong waves hit the ferry. Waves were up to three meters high during the incident. About 70 foreign passengers were evacuated and safety arrived on land which took about an hour with the ferry finally sinking down under the sea.

A catamaran carrying 29 people, the majority being foreign tourists, capsized this evening, December 23rd, 2023, near Dongtan Beach after coming from Koh Larn near sunset. There were six minor injuries.

A tourist speedboat, “Bandaya 19,” capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 km from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday (Dec 24). The boat carried 73 tourists, including 3 children and 4 crew members.
