UPDATE: Karon Authority Says Black Water Flowing into Sea Not from Businesses

Karon –

Wastewater flowing onto Karon Beach is not from businesses but rain washed away through a canal, said Karon authorities.

First, our previous story:

Locals are urging authorities to investigate after foul smelling black water was found flowing into the sea at Karon Beach.

Now for the update:

The Karon Municipality Deputy Mayor Mr. Wanlop Nadon and his team inspected the area. Mr. Wanlop told the Phuket Express that the black water flowed into the sea after rain washed away sediment in the canal.

“The canal has not been dredged for more than ten years. The rain then washed away this sediment into the sea.” Wanlop stated.

“The original plan for major canal dredging was twice a year but it was not done as the contractor did not continue to work. The short-term plan is to dredge the canal as soon as possible. This black water is from nature but we except that it has affected tourism.” Wanlop added.

“In addition, we have ordered temporary closure for many restaurants near the Karon Municipality until they have improved their wastewater treatment systems. We have continued to ensure that more than 200 businesses in Karon have treated their wastewater before releasing.” Wanlop concluded.
