Patong –
Twenty French motorbike racers have been arrested after causing a public nuisance.
Video clips of dozens of foreigners on motorbikes racing in Patong last night have gone viral on local social media groups, causing outrage and many complaints from local residents who claimed they were shocked and horrified at the behavior.
The “concerned citizens” said the racing was disruptive to residents trying to relax and potentially dangerous. Most racers were not wearing protective motorbike helmets as required by Thai law, added the complainants.
Patong Police Chief Colonel Sujin Nilbodee ordered the Patong Traffic Police to crackdown on the foreign motorbike racers.
Patong Police reported that 20 of the French motorbike racers were arrested. They were taken to the Patong Police Station for further legal action. They had reportedly nearly all been renting motorbikes and were on vacation. Their names were not released to the press and they did not release any public statements about their behavior.
Colonel Sujin told the Phuket Express that motorbike rental operators should inform tourists not to be a public nuisance by racing on roads. Patong Traffic Police will increase patrols to crack down on motorbike racers in the area.
