Patong –
Patong Municipality has ordered the removal of unauthorized modifications at Chabad House in Patong, Phuket, and work to dismantle the rooftop structures is already under way.
Our previous story:
Now for the update:
Officials found that the building’s rooftop had been altered without the required permits. A steel frame covered by a large white tent measuring roughly 14 by 12 metres had been installed and was being used as a restaurant, club and function space. On the 1st of September 2026 the municipality issued an order under Section 40(1) of the building-control law requiring the owners to halt all further construction, modification or removal work and to rectify the violations within 30 days.
By the 18th of September the rooftop tent and supporting structure had begun to be taken down in compliance with that order. Inspectors also discovered that part of the ground-level car park, approximately 15 by 12 metres, had been converted into a dining area. The municipality has likewise ordered that this space cease being used for that purpose.
The municipal action forms part of a wider provincial review. On the 15th of September Phuket Governor Chotinrin Kerdsom led a multi-agency inspection of the premises, examining building permits, the nature of activities conducted on site, and overall compliance with regulations.
Under the 30-day deadline, the owners may either restore the building to its previously approved condition or submit a formal application for the necessary permits. Any application will be subject to engineering review covering structural integrity, load-bearing capacity and public-safety standards before further decisions are made.
Authorities are continuing to monitor progress. While the rooftop structures are being removed, reports indicate that the converted parking-area space has not yet been restored. Provincial officials are still compiling a complete assessment of the site.
