PRESS RELEASE:
The government is moving forward with the first phase of the Phuket Expressway, a Kathu–Patong route expected to cut travel time between the two areas from about 30 minutes to five minutes. The project will provide an alternative to the existing route, ease congestion, and improve access to Phuket’s major tourism and economic areas.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesangchan reported on September 16 that the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has submitted the project to the Ministry of Transport. The proposed tunnel width has been reduced from 17 meters to 14 meters, with relevant agencies reviewing the revised plans. Cabinet consideration is expected around December 2026.
Land acquisition is targeted for completion by January 2027, with contractor selection expected around April and construction beginning in October. The four-year construction period is scheduled to conclude in September 2031, followed by the expressway’s opening in October 2031.
The project will include the Kathu–Patong tunnel and interchanges at Kathu and Patong, connecting with surrounding roads and reducing pressure on the existing route. Once operational, Phase 1 is projected to handle about 50,000–60,000 vehicles per day, including motorcycles, while improving traffic flow, connectivity, and road safety across the area.
The preceding is a press release from the Thai Government PR Department.
