Phuket –
Police in Chalong executed a daring undercover operation by disguising themselves as GrabBike riders to infiltrate the Thai Mai community in Rawai, leading to the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the seizure of methamphetamine and crystal meth.
Acting on intelligence from informants, officers learned that narcotics were being distributed inside the densely populated Thai Mai neighborhood, an area notorious for its maze-like alleys and heightened vigilance against law enforcement. To avoid detection, one officer donned a GrabBike uniform and rode a motorcycle while another posed as a passenger, blending seamlessly into the community.
Upon arrival at the designated meeting point, police identified the suspect, 29-year-old Anuwat “Mai.” As officers moved in, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly subdued thanks to a pre-arranged perimeter of officers.
A search uncovered 541 methamphetamine pills, 3.29 grams of crystal meth, and drug-packaging equipment. Authorities also confiscated assets believed to be linked to drug trafficking, including a red-plated Yamaha NMAX motorcycle valued at approximately 98,000 baht, a mobile phone, and 12,210 baht in cash.
The suspect now faces charges of possession with intent to distribute Category 1 narcotics, a serious offense under Thai law. Police have transferred him, along with the evidence, to Chalong Police Station for further investigation and are working to trace the wider network behind the supply.
