Phuket Prepares for Rising Waste During Vegetarian Festival

Phuket –

Phuket City officials are stepping up preparations to handle the surge in waste expected during the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival, scheduled for October 10–18, 2026. The festival, known for its street processions and rituals, generates significant amounts of refuse, particularly firecracker debris from the Iew Keng ceremonies held at local shrines.

Mayor Supachok La-ongpetch led an inspection of the city’s landfill and central waste management facility this week, meeting with staff to outline strategies for coping with the increased load. Some areas of the site have already been leveled to accommodate both organic waste and firecracker remnants during the nine-day event.

Currently, the city is grappling with approximately 11,000 tons of accumulated waste awaiting incineration, well above the facility’s designed capacity of 9,000 tons. Daily intake averages between 1,100 and 1,300 tons, putting further strain on the system.

To ease the burden, the municipality is working closely with the Phuket Shrine Association, urging all participating shrines to separate waste at the source. Officials believe that early sorting will help reduce pressure on disposal systems and ensure smoother operations throughout the festival period.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, one of the island’s most iconic cultural events, draws thousands of visitors each year. While it is celebrated for its spiritual rituals and dramatic processions, the environmental impact has become an increasing concern, prompting city leaders to balance tradition with sustainable waste management practices.
