Phuket:
Authorities in Phuket have launched a comprehensive inspection of shooting ranges in Kathu and Patong, wanting to strengthen safety standards and reduce risks for both residents and tourists.
Deputy Governor Pol. Lt. Col. Khetarat Chansilp, who also serves as security advisor to the Interior Ministry led the inspection on Tuesday (September 8th). The operation covered four shooting ranges in Kathu District, with participation from local administrative bodies, Kathu Municipality, Patong Municipality, and relevant agencies under the coordination of District Chief Witiya Jitsuphap.
This is part of the government’s nine-point social order campaign, focusing on preventing illegal activities and ensuring tourist safety. Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Arsit Sumpuntharat has focused on strict enforcement to build public confidence in Phuket as a safe destination.

Officials examined building permits, construction modifications, and safety measures at the ranges, particularly those located near residential areas and tourist zones. Deputy Governor Khetarat stressed that the inspections are preventive in nature, noting the risks posed if firearms or ammunition were accessed improperly.
“Phuket is a major tourist hub. We must prioritize safety and prevent incidents involving firearms that could endanger lives and property,” he said.
Preliminary findings highlighted issues regarding building authorization and compliance. Facilities found operating without proper permits or in violation of regulations may face suspension or closure under local authority powers. Future applications for new shooting ranges will be subject to stricter reviews, considering proximity to communities, schools, tourist attractions, and safety protocols.

The deputy governor stated that the matter is sensitive, recalling past firearm-related incidents, and affirmed that inspections are designed to prevent recurrence.
Phuket officials pledged to continue strengthening social order through measures against narcotics, firearm control, and strict enforcement of laws governing businesses. The province wants to enhance safety standards and reinforce its reputation as a secure international tourist destination.
