Provincial authorities in Phuket have launched a sweeping inspection of shooting ranges across the island, following government directives set at strengthening firearm control and public safety.
On Tuesday (August 18th) deputy Governor Pol. Lt. Col. Khetarat Chansilp, acting as security advisor to the Ministry of Interior, to lead the operation alongside district chiefs, police officers, and local administrative bodies. The move comes in the wake of a fatal incident in Nonthaburi, where a customer used a rented firearm from a shooting range and later died.
Officials said that all operators must strictly comply with firearm regulations. Every weapon available for rental must be properly registered, with verifiable documentation of ownership and origin. Ammunition stocks must match authorized quantities, with detailed records of issuance and usage to ensure accountability and prevent diversion for unlawful purposes.
Initial inspections in Phuket revealed that shooting ranges were operating in accordance with licensing requirements, with valid permits and documentation in place. Nonetheless, authorities reiterated the need for rigorous adherence to legal conditions and licensing terms. Operators were instructed to maintain strict monitoring systems so that firearms and ammunition can be tracked at all times.
