Authorities Probe Allegations of Discrimination by Foreign-Owned Shops in Patong

Phuket—

Provincial officials have launched an investigation into an Israeli-owned restaurant in Patong following complaints that the establishment refused service to Thai customers.

Pol. Capt. Khetarat Chansilp, Deputy Governor of Phuket and Acting Security Advisor to the Ministry of Interior, led the inspection of the restaurant after reports surfaced that Thai nationals were denied entry. The move is part of a broader government initiative to regulate foreign-owned businesses and ensure compliance with Thai law.

Authorities are examining the restaurant’s ownership structure, management practices, and related documentation to determine whether the business is operating legally or using Thai nationals as nominees to conceal foreign control. Officials stressed that nominee arrangements are prohibited under Thai law and undermine fair competition.

Khetarat said that all businesses must treat customers equally, regardless of nationality, and warned against establishments that cater exclusively to foreign clientele. He also instructed officers to monitor venues that advertise primarily in Hebrew or appear to target only international visitors.

The Phuket administration reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights and maintaining public confidence in the tourism sector. If violations are confirmed, legal action will be taken to preserve fairness in business operations and uphold Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming destination for both locals and tourists.
