Phuket officials have stepped up enforcement against nominee-operated businesses in the island’s tourism sector, targeting motorbike rental companies suspected of using Thai nationals as proxies for foreign owners.
On August 17th, 2026, Deputy Governor Pol. Lt. Col. Khetarat Chansilp, acting as security advisor to the Ministry of Interior inspected nine businesses in Karon. The operation involved nine car rental establishments and was supported by police investigators, traffic officers, provincial employment officials, and administrative staff.
The inspections focused on uncovering irregularities in business operations, shareholder structures, financial records, and sources of investment. Authorities reinforced the government’s policy to intensify scrutiny of nominee arrangements, where Thai citizens are used to conceal foreign ownership, particularly in high-tourism areas where foreign investment is prevalent.
Officials reminded operators to strictly comply with Thai law and to advise customers on safe driving practices and adherence to traffic regulations. The initiative is not only to curb illegal business practices but also to enhance road safety and protect tourists.
Phuket’s administration confirmed that similar checks will continue across other high-risk sectors. Any evidence of nominee activity or unlawful conduct will be met with strict legal action, with authorities pledging to uphold fairness in business operations while safeguarding the province’s reputation as a safe and trustworthy destination.
