Phuket police arrested two young men from the United Arab Emirates after a violent attempt to evade a traffic checkpoint in Kathu on Thursday (August 13th). The incident left a police officer injured and shows the dangers of reckless behavior on local roads.
Officers from Kathu Police Station were conducting routine traffic inspections at the Si Kor checkpoint on Phra Baramee Road. Police spotted a black motorcycle, carrying two foreign nationals. When asked to stop for a license check, the rider accelerated through the checkpoint instead.
Police Sergeant Major Siwiyot Yodrabam pursued the fleeing motorcycle along Phra Phuket Kaew Road. During the chase, the passenger allegedly kicked the officer’s motorcycle, causing him to lose balance. The suspects continued to flee, driving against traffic and cutting across the officer’s path, which resulted in a crash that left him injured and damaged his vehicle.
Despite his injuries, Sgt. Maj. Siwiyot continued the pursuit. The chase ended in a dead-end street inside The Valley housing estate, where the suspects abandoned their motorcycle and attempted to escape on foot. Officers quickly surrounded the area and apprehended the pair near the estate entrance.
The suspects were identified as Mr. Sohail, 21, the rider, and Mr. Hammad, 20, the passenger, both Emirati nationals. Police informed them of their legal rights and charges before escorting them, along with the seized motorcycle, to Kathu Police Station for further investigation.
Authorities confirmed that both men face multiple charges, including resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and traffic violations. The case has been handed over to investigators for prosecution under Thai law.
