On Wednesday morning (August 12th), the people of Phuket gathered in solemn unity to pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, on the occasion of her birthday anniversary and National Mother’s Day.
At 7:00 a.m., Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom presided over the royal merit-making ceremony at Mahisorn Auditorium at Phuket Provincial Hall. The program included Buddhist chanting, meditation, and alms-offering to monks, dedicated as a royal merit in honor of Her Majesty.
Phra Sriwachirakhun, abbot of Wat Sirisil Supharam (Luang Pu Supha Temple) and ecclesiastical head of Kathu, led the monastic rites. Distinguished attendees included Pawirisa Kerdsom, President of the Phuket Red Cross Society and Chairwoman of the Provincial Interior Housewives Association, along with Deputy Governors Suwit Phansengiam and Romdon Hayae-ae. Senior officials from the judiciary, military, police, civil service, and members of the public also joined the ceremony.
Governor Kerdsom began by lighting incense and candles before the Triple Gem and presenting homage before the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Monks then conducted the sacred chanting of protective verses. The governor and his spouse, together with provincial leaders, offered ceremonial alms and robes to the monks, followed by blessings and water-pouring rituals.
The ceremony concluded with a mass alms-offering, where monks and novices received food and offerings from the assembled citizens. This act symbolized the people’s enduring loyalty and heartfelt remembrance of Her Majesty’s boundless compassion.
August 12th is recognized nationally for two significant reasons: the birthday anniversary of Her Royal Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, and Thailand’s National Mother’s Day. The Cabinet has reaffirmed this date as a public holiday each year, ensuring that Thai citizens may continue to honor Her Majesty’s legacy and uphold the values of motherhood as a cornerstone of Thai society.
