Authorities in Phuket have made the first arrest under a sweeping nationwide operation aimed at curbing illegal firearms, following orders from Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Arsit Sumpuntharat announced that since August 7th, provincial officials and police have intensified checkpoints and patrols across the country to prevent weapons from being carried in public. The campaign is part of a broader push to enhance public safety and protect lives and property.
On the night of August 10th, a joint team led by Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kedsom and senior Interior Ministry officials set up a checkpoint in Koh Kaew, Muang District. Officers stopped a suspicious BMW sedan and discovered a CZ pistol with a magazine loaded with 30 rounds hidden beneath the driver’s seat.
The driver, identified only as Natth (surname withheld), 29, was unable to produce a firearm license or permit to carry the weapon. He was arrested on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and carrying a weapon in public without authorization. Police at Muang Phuket Station are now pursuing the case, with prosecutors expected to seek the maximum penalty under Thai law.
