Marine authorities in Phuket have successfully rescued a rare spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) that was found stranded and alive on Patong Beach.
The rescue this week shows the swift coordination between local security staff, the Kusoldharm Foundation, and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Center of the Upper Andaman Sea.
The DMCR told the Phuket Express that the female juvenile dolphin, measuring 158 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 25 kilograms, was discovered in a weakened state. According to veterinarians, the animal was underweight (Body Condition Score 2/5), unable to swim normally, and showed signs of dehydration and hypoglycemia. The dolphin was observed floating on its side with muscle stiffness, indicating severe distress.
Upon receiving the alert from beach security, officials quickly transferred the dolphin to the Siritharn Rare Marine Animal Rescue Center, where a veterinary team provided emergency treatment. The dolphin is now under 24-hour observation and care, with staff working in shifts to monitor its condition and support recovery.
Authorities statedthat rapid response is crucial in saving stranded marine mammals, particularly rare species such as spinner dolphins, which are known for their acrobatic leaps and playfulness in the wild. The incident also shows the importance of community vigilance, as the initial report from beach staff enabled timely intervention.
