Entertainment venue operators in Phuket have formally petitioned the provincial government to expand zoning areas for nightlife businesses, arguing that current restrictions no longer reflect the island’s booming tourism sector.
At a meeting held at the Phuket Provincial Hall, Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa received the proposal from Sulaymart Kaewngamdee, president of the Phuket Entertainment Operators Association, along with a delegation of business owners. The group stated their intention to operate fully within the law but noted that existing zoning boundaries are too limited to accommodate the growth of tourism and related businesses.
Sulaymart explained that expanding zoning would allow operators to apply for proper licenses, strengthen confidence in the industry, create jobs, and further stimulate Phuket’s economy. “We want to enter the system legally. Adjusting zoning will help ensure our businesses contribute positively to tourism and employment while maintaining compliance,” he said.
Deputy Governor Romdon confirmed that the proposal will be reviewed in line with Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom’s policy of inclusive decision-making. He stressed that the process will follow Ministry of Interior guidelines and legal frameworks. A working committee will be appointed to study the details, assess suitability, and, if approved in principle, organize public hearings across all three districts of Phuket to gather community input.
Authorities explained that any changes must balance economic growth with social and cultural considerations. Zoning adjustments will take into account community impacts, urban planning, and restrictions near schools, temples, and religious sites. “The province will proceed carefully, ensuring transparency and broad consultation so that the outcome benefits both the economy and the people of Phuket,” Romdon said.
The proposal marks a significant step in aligning Phuket’s entertainment industry with legal standards while addressing the realities of a rapidly expanding tourism market.
