Residents in parts of Phuket reported feeling tremors late Wednesday morning after a moderate earthquake struck off the northern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The quake, recorded at 11:18 AM local time, registered a magnitude of 5.1 at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 381 kilometers southwest of Satun Province, Thailand.
Reports of Shaking in Phuket
- Talad Yai, Phuket Town: Office workers on the fourth floor of a building under five stories reported noticeable vibrations. Light fixtures were seen swaying during the tremor.
- Patong: Guests and staff at a hotel on the eighth floor of a mid-rise building felt the structure sway for about two seconds.
No damage or injuries have been reported in Thailand, but the incident prompted concern among residents who experienced the shaking.
Northern Sumatra is part of a seismically active zone along the boundary of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earthquakes in this region are not uncommon, and tremors are occasionally felt across southern Thailand, particularly in coastal provinces such as Phuket and Satun.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no tsunami warning was issued.
