Authorities in Phuket have stepped up inspections of hotels seeking to renew their operating licenses, wanting to raise safety and service standards in line with the Hotel Act of 2004.
Governor Chotnarin Kedsom assigned Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa and a working team to inspect six hotels in Karon as part of the license renewal process.
Deputy Governor Romdon stated that the province is intensifying oversight under the governor’s directive, noting that more than 300 hotels currently have expired licenses awaiting renewal. To accelerate the process, three inspection teams have been deployed across districts, conducting weekly checks while expediting paperwork to ensure timely approvals.
The inspections focus on full compliance with the Hotel Act, including building safety, legal documentation, environmental standards, cleanliness, and guest security. Larger hotels undergo more detailed reviews, particularly regarding environmental impact and safety protocols. Operators have also been reminded to strengthen anti-drug measures within their establishments.
Since the new provincial administration took office, nearly 100 hotels have already been inspected, with the remaining 200-plus scheduled for review within two months. The initiative is designed to enhance Phuket’s reputation as a world-class destination by ensuring visitor safety and reinforcing confidence in the island’s hospitality sector.
