Thailand Braces for Heavy to Very Heavy Rain This Weekend Warns Meteorological Department

Bangkok

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued Warning No. 6, alerting the public to heavy to very heavy rainfall across much of Thailand from May 29th to June 1st, 2026. Authorities warn of risks including flash floods and forest run-off, particularly in vulnerable low-lying and mountainous areas.

A rather strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a monsoon trough across upper Thailand, is driving the conditions. Thunderstorms are forecast over 60-70% of the country on average, with heavy downpours expected in many areas and very heavy rain in parts of the South, East, western Upper North, and Central regions.

The warning, which follows earlier announcements (including a fourth bulletin issued on May 28th), urges residents nationwide to prepare for dangers from intense and accumulated rainfall. This includes potential flooding in waterways, flash floods, and mountain or forest run-off, especially near foothills and low-lying zones. The TMD has placed 56 provinces under special monitoring for thunderstorms.

In the upper Andaman Sea (north of Phuket), waves are expected to reach 2-3 metres high, exceeding 3 metres in thundershower areas. In the lower Andaman Sea (south of Krabi) and upper Gulf of Thailand, waves will be around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres during storms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore, and all vessel operators are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm zones.

– South (West Coast): Particularly high risk of heavy to very heavy rain in provinces such as Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi.
– North, Northeast, Central, and East: Scattered to widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain expected in multiple provinces.
– Bangkok and vicinity: Scattered thundershowers possible, with isolated heavy rain.

The public is strongly advised to stay informed through official channels, avoid outdoor activities in risky areas during heavy downpours, and take precautions for personal safety and property. Farmers and livestock owners should also prepare for potential impacts on agriculture.

Further updates will be available on the TMD website (tmd.go.th) or via its 24-hour hotlines: 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182. Residents should monitor local announcements for any evacuation or safety measures in high-risk zones.

This monsoon-driven weather pattern is typical for the season but has been intensified by current atmospheric conditions, prompting the extended warning period.
