Phuket –
On Friday (May 29th) authorities in Phuket have issued urgent warnings to tourists after several Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish, also known locally as “fire jellyfish” or “Portuguese warship jellyfish”, were spotted along popular beaches. The venomous creatures were reported at Nai Harn Beach, Yanui Beach, and around Racha Island.
Lifeguards have responded quickly by placing warning signs along the affected areas to alert visitors. The Portuguese Man O’ War, easily recognized by its distinctive blue, balloon-like float, is not a true jellyfish but a siphonophore. Its long tentacles can deliver painful stings that are potentially dangerous to humans, causing severe skin irritation and, in some cases, more serious medical complications.
Tourists are strongly advised to avoid swimming in the flagged zones and to exercise caution when walking along the shoreline. Local officials emphasized that anyone stung should seek immediate medical attention, as the venom can trigger intense pain and allergic reactions.
The warning comes at the start of the tourist season, when Phuket’s beaches are especially busy. Authorities are urging visitors to remain vigilant and follow lifeguard instructions to ensure their safety.
