Travelers From High-risk Ebola Countries to Face Mandatory 21-Days Quarantine, says Phuket Official

Phuket, Thailand —

Authorities in Phuket have announced heightened precautionary measures against Ebola, stressing that while no cases have been detected in Thailand, the province must act as a frontline defense due to its role as an international gateway, which means a roughly three week mandatory quarantine period for people arriving from high risk countries, currently the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, although the country list could change.

At a meeting of the Phuket Communicable Disease Committee chaired by Governor Nirat Phongsitthithavorn, officials outlined urgent steps to strengthen screening, quarantine, and preparedness. The governor stated that Phuket, with its numerous direct international flights, must strictly follow protocols set by the Ministry of Public Health.

We learned from COVID-19 that complacency is dangerous. Strong emergency response and surveillance are essential to prevent damage,” Governor Nirat said.

  • Mandatory Quarantine: Travelers arriving from high-risk countries will face a 21-day quarantine upon entry.
  • Flight Restrictions: National authorities are preparing to reroute flights from affected countries to Suvarnabhumi Airport only, with Phuket tasked to manage any residual arrivals.
  • Active Monitoring: Currently, 11 travelers from risk countries are in Phuket. All are healthy tourists under close observation by health officials.

Provincial health chief Dr. Dusadee Kongtrakulsub explained that Ebola differs fundamentally from COVID-19. It does not spread through the air but requires direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of symptomatic patients. The virus has an incubation period of 2–21 days, and while treatment is supportive only, survival depends largely on individual immunity.

Past outbreaks have shown fatality rates ranging from 39.5% to 66%, though the latest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (May 2026) reports a lower case fatality rate of 11–32.5%. Importantly, Thailand has never reported a confirmed or suspected Ebola case.

Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization President Rewat Areerob noted that local government, administrative agencies, and the private sector are closely aligned with national health directives. Drawing on lessons from COVID-19, he expressed confidence in the province’s readiness.

Both the governor and provincial leaders urged residents and tourists to rely only on official updates from the Public Relations Office and the Provincial Health Office, warning against misinformation and fake news that could cause unnecessary panic.
