Phuket –
Authorities in Phuket have stepped in to resolve a dispute between a local shop owner and Chinese tourists that recently sparked widespread debate online, wanting to protect the province’s reputation as a welcoming destination.
The incident gained attention after a video clip circulated on social media showing a heated argument between an elderly shopkeeper in Phuket’s Old Town and visiting Chinese tourists. The footage quickly drew criticism and raised concerns about the impact on the city’s tourism image. The Phuket Express noted that this was not the first time with the same individual at the same shop.

On May 20 at 2:30 p.m., Siwatch Rawangkul, District Chief of Mueang Phuket visited the shop on Yaowarat Road, Talat Yai Subdistrict, to investigate and mediate. Initial inquiries revealed that the confrontation occurred on May 17, when the shop enforced its policy of charging a 40-baht entry fee per person.
During the May 20 meeting, officials and the shop owner reached a mutual understanding, agreeing on friendlier communication and hospitality practices to ensure tourists feel welcome.
