Surat Thani—
Provincial Governor Chumphon Wannachatsiri has announced urgent measures to address concerns over foreign nationals residing illegally and working long-term on Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, and Koh Tao, following widespread media reports of Israeli and Russian citizens in particular allegedly misusing tourist visas to work and engage in activities deemed inappropriate.

The governor explained that such practices risk damaging the province’s tourism image, disturbing public order, and affecting the way of life of local communities. He confirmed that authorities are investigating the scale of foreign residency in the islands and are intensifying enforcement against illegal business operations, particularly those involving nominee structures.
Governor Chumphon outlined a multi-agency approach involving immigration police, provincial employment offices, and security agencies to ensure swift and effective action. He noted that recent operations have already yielded results, with several cases under prosecution.
Beyond immediate enforcement, the province is developing long-term strategies to maintain order and protect Surat Thani’s reputation as a premier tourist destination. The governor urged residents and business operators to cooperate by reporting suspected violations through official complaint channels.
“Public participation is essential to safeguard peace and strengthen confidence in Surat Thani’s tourism industry,” he said, stressing that sustainable tourism depends on both regulatory oversight and community vigilance.
