Authorities in Phuket have seized more than six kilograms of heroin concealed within traditional Thai clothing, thwarting an attempt to smuggle the drugs overseas.
The Wichit Police told the Phuket Express that on Tusday (May 5th) they and the forensic officers, examined evidence linked to charges of possession and attempted export of Category 1 narcotics. The investigation followed a joint operation by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Vichit Police, who intercepted suspicious parcels sent through a private courier service.
The packages, originating from Loei Province and addressed to a housing estate near Phuket Airport, contained two sacks filled with 48 sets of ready-made Thai garments. Hidden inside was heroin weighing 6.198 kilograms. The drugs were discovered on April 30th, when officers conducted the initial seizure.
Investigators revealed that traffickers had planned to hire couriers to transport the heroin to Australia, where the street value could soar to ten times the domestic price. In Thailand, the narcotics were valued at 300,000–500,000 baht per kilogram, but in Australia the price could reach millions.
Forensic teams are now collecting latent fingerprints from the garments and packaging to identify suspects. Police confirmed that evidence will be submitted to the court to obtain arrest warrants for those involved, as the case proceeds under Thai law.
