Local authorities in Phuket conducted a late-night inspection in Patong following reports of foreign nationals using young children to solicit money from tourists.
The Phuket Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office told the Phuket Express that the inspection was prompted by a social media post alleging that foreign families were bringing children to beg in busy tourist areas.
Officials confirmed the presence of a foreign family of Arabians walking through restaurants and hotels in Patong, asking tourists for money. Photographs and video recordings were taken as evidence, and authorities announced plans for further monitoring.
During the inspection, officers encountered a woman accompanied by a child, reportedly engaging in begging behavior. Staff from the Phuket Shelter for Children and Families spoke with her, provided information on relevant laws, and issued a formal warning. A statement was recorded to prevent recurrence, and officials pledged to pursue assistance measures under Thailand’s Child Protection Act.
Authorities explained that child welfare remains a priority and that measures will be taken to safeguard minors from exploitation in tourist areas.
