Officials in Phuket have launched a coordinated operation to reclaim more than five rai of public land illegally occupied along Bang Tao Beach in Cherng Talay, Thalang on Wednesday (April 29th).
Relevant officials told the Phuket Express that the crackdown was ordered by Governor Nirun Phongsitthithavorn and Deputy Governor Adul Chuthong, with Provincial Clerk Rungrueng Thimabutr leading the mission. The task force included Thalang District officers, the Phuket Forest Center, Cherng Talay Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and other agencies.
Findings from the Operation
- Extent of encroachment: Over five rai of beachfront land, classified under Thailand’s Land Act and Forest Act of 1941, had been unlawfully seized.
- Illegal use: Investors fenced off public land, charged access fees, and subleased plots to operators. At least 16 restaurants and other structures were found on the site.
- Evidence collected: Officials documented the encroachments, seized the land, and prepared summonses for those involved.
Provincial Clerk Rungrueng Thimabutr stated that the operation reflects the governor’s policy to restore transparency and order to Phuket’s beaches. “This integrated effort ensures that public land remains for community use, not private profit. We will continue expanding inspections to other areas to make Phuket a model for sustainable land management,” he said.
Authorities stressed that Phuket is prioritizing the protection of public spaces and natural resources. The province wants to reclaim encroached beaches across the island, ensuring equal and sustainable access for all. Officials warned that any future violations will be prosecuted without exception, showing Phuket’s commitment to preserving its image as a world-class tourism destination.
