Authorities in Phuket have arrested a man in Karon for illegally possessing a protected slow loris, a nocturnal primate often exploited for tourist photo opportunities. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Khao Phra Thaew Non-Hunting Area in coordination with Karon Police and local administrative officials, following complaints of wildlife being used for commercial gain.
The Karon Police told the Phuket Express that on Monday (April 27th) during the evening operation, officers discovered the suspect carrying a slow loris in a shoulder bag. The man was also found in possession of two knives and a shark-tooth iron weapon. Officials reported that he resisted arrest and attempted to assault law enforcement officers before being subdued.
The suspect now faces charges under Thailand’s Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act (2019), which prohibits the possession of protected species without authorization. Convictions carry penalties of up to five years in prison, fines of up to 500,000 baht, or both.
The confiscated slow loris has been transferred to the Phang Nga Wildlife Breeding Center for rehabilitation, with plans to release it back into its natural habitat once recovered. Officials explained that using protected animals for tourist entertainment not only violates the law but also causes severe harm to the welfare of wildlife.
Authorities stressed that this operation reflects a broader effort to enforce conservation laws and safeguard Phuket’s natural resources against illegal exploitation. Tourists and residents are urged to report any instances of protected animals being used for commercial purposes so that officials can take swift legal action.
