Phuket –
Phuket is embracing the circular economy by spotlighting “Live Like a Local”, a local brand transforming discarded fishing nets and marine debris into premium fashion and souvenir products. The initiative was showcased during the April provincial administrative meeting at Phuket City Hall, where officials showed off the brand’s role in sustainable tourism development.

Deputy Governor Teerapong Chuaychu praised the creativity of the community-led project, noting its success in turning “ghost nets”—abandoned fishing gear that poses a major threat to marine ecosystems—into practical, stylish items. The collection includes fashion-forward bags and souvenirs that reflect Phuket’s cultural identity, blending traditional weaving skills with modern design and local batik fabrics.

The impact is tangible: more than 2,000 kilograms of ocean waste have already been removed and repurposed. Beyond environmental benefits, the project provides sustainable income opportunities for local communities, aligning with Phuket’s broader ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies to support grassroots innovation.

Officials added that Live Like a Local represents a clear example of Thailand’s emerging soft power—handcrafted, eco-friendly products that resonate with global consumers while preserving local heritage.
For those interested in supporting the initiative, details are available on the brand’s Facebook page Live Like a Local, and visitors can explore the products at upcoming tourism promotion events across Phuket.
