Authorities in Phuket are stepping up efforts to manage stray dogs through a structured shelter program, wanting to safeguard public health and enhance the province’s image as a responsible tourism destination.
At a recent meeting held at the Provincial Livestock Office the meeting focused on long-term strategies for sustainable stray animal management. Reports presented to the committee showed that in fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 – September 2025), a total of 269 dogs were admitted to the shelter.
For fiscal year 2026, the shelter requested 5,029,610 baht in funding, of which 1,398,480 baht has already been allocated. Looking ahead, the fiscal year 2027 plan sets aside 5,001,230 baht to support care for an estimated 1,004 dogs.
Officials said that future budget proposals should cover not only food and shelter but also veterinary supplies, medical treatment, and other essential expenses. He urged local administrative organizations to provide consistent financial support to maximize the program’s effectiveness. In addition, the shelter welcomes donations from the public to sustain its operations.
The initiative prioritizes comprehensive management, from intake and transport of stray dogs to food provision and medical care, while working toward the ultimate goal of establishing rabies-free zones.
Officials stressed that the program is vital for public safety and for strengthening Phuket’s reputation as a tourist destination that values both animal welfare and community well-being.
