Phuket Municipality Prepares Landfill Operations with Strict Waste Disposal Rules

Phuket City Municipality has finalized preparations to open its central landfill site for waste disposal from local administrative organizations (LAOs) and government agencies, beginning April 18. Mayor Supachok La-ongpetch personally inspected the site to ensure readiness and strict compliance with designated disposal zones.

Phuket City Municipality has ‘requested’ all local administrative organizations and private operators across the province to temporarily halt the delivery of solid waste to the Phuket Provincial Waste Disposal Center between April 11–19, 2026, after a fire broke out at the landfill site.

Phuket has declared an emergency assistance zone as crews battle a stubborn blaze at the municipal landfill near Saphan Hin, which has been burning for two consecutive days.

To maintain order and reduce congestion, officials have mapped out traffic routes for garbage trucks and installed red flag markers to clearly indicate waste drop-off points. All vehicles will be required to unload waste only at these designated areas, a measure aimed at preventing disorder and improving efficiency within the landfill.

The inspection was joined by key municipal figures, including Secretary Nit Phetpradapsakul, Engineering Office Director Yutthana Kanchanaphak, members of the Phuket City Council, and relevant staff. The group reviewed operational readiness at the Phuket Provincial Solid Waste Management Center, which will serve as the hub for incoming waste.

The landfill will officially begin accepting waste on April 18, 2026, with operating hours set from 06:00 to 18:00 daily. Authorities have urged all participating agencies to strictly follow the disposal guidelines to ensure smooth operations.

Municipal officials also addressed fire safety concerns. If no smoke is detected at the landfill site on April 18, disaster prevention personnel will be withdrawn, with monitoring duties handed over to PJT Technology Co., Ltd., which has provided staff and water trucks for fire watch. Despite this transition, Phuket Municipality confirmed it will continue to maintain readiness and oversight at all times.
