Marine and Coastal Resources officials responded to an urgent call from a local resident, who reported a live dolphin stranded on the shoreline in front of a beach resort in Sakhu.
Upon arrival, specialists from the Siritharn Rare Marine Animal Rescue Center identified the animal as a female spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), still in its juvenile stage. Measuring 175 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 26.5 kilograms, the dolphin was found in a weakened condition.
Veterinary staff noted the dolphin’s body condition was poor, with visible abrasions along its side caused by stranding. The animal was dehydrated, suffering from low blood sugar, and suspected of having an infection that contributed to its frailty. Unable to swim normally, the dolphin required immediate intervention.
Marine veterinarians placed the dolphin under critical care, administering treatment for dehydration and infection while stabilizing its vital signs. Rescue personnel are maintaining 24-hour monitoring at the Siritharn Center to observe recovery progress and provide ongoing support.
Authorities credited the swift report as crucial in enabling timely rescue efforts. Officials added that public vigilance remains vital in protecting vulnerable marine species along Phuket’s coastline.
