Phuket –
Authorities have released a summary of road safety statistics from the intensive control period during the Songkran festival, April 10–16, 2026. Despite heightened enforcement, the province recorded 32 accidents, resulting in 29 injuries requiring hospital admission and 5 fatalities.
Mueang Phuket District remained the most dangerous, with 17 accidents, 16 injuries, and 3 deaths. Kathu District which is home of Patong followed with 9 accidents, while Thalang District reported 6 accidents.
All 5 fatalities were Thai nationals. Injuries were more diverse: 55.17% Thai nationals, 20.70% Myanmar nationals, and 6.89% Russian nationals.
Motorcycles dominated the accident profile, accounting for 93.76% of cases. The leading risk behaviors were:
- Not wearing helmets (40.35%)
- Speeding (33.33%)
- Driving under the influence (14.04%)
Most incidents occurred after midnight through early morning hours, a period consistently flagged as high-risk during holiday seasons.
While this year’s Songkran saw no foreign tourist fatalities, the persistence of risky driving behaviors among Thai road users highlights ongoing challenges for public safety campaigns. Authorities continue to stress helmet use, speed control, and sobriety as critical measures to reduce casualties.
