Patong police have confirmed the arrest of seven French nationals after they were found obstructing traffic while celebrating Songkran on Prachanukhro Road near the Malin Market.
The Patong Police told the Phuket Express that the group of tourists had gathered to play with water in a manner that caused public disturbance and blocked traffic flow. Officers responded to complaints from local residents, intervened, and detained the individuals on charges of “causing annoyance to others.” The suspects were later handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
Police added that this incident was unrelated to widely circulated social media claims suggesting that foreign tourists had sprayed water directly at officers stationed at Songkran service points. Similarly, a separate viral clip showing water being thrown at a passing van has not resulted in any formal complaints, as no victims have come forward.
Following the arrests, Patong police issued warnings to local businesses and residents, urging them not to place water barrels or engage in water play on sidewalks and roadways in ways that obstruct traffic. Officials stressed that stricter enforcement measures are being applied to maintain public order and ensure safety during the festival.
