Phuket —
Patong Police have confirmed that the woman accused on social media of being Cambodian and insulting Thai people inside a well-known shopping mall is, in fact, a Thai national.
The incident came to light on Friday (April 3rd) after posts circulated online claiming that a Cambodian woman had written offensive remarks about Thai citizens inside Jungceylon Mall in Patong. Concerned by the public reaction, Patong Police, under the direction of Acting Police Colonel Korakrit Khanthakrua, launched an immediate investigation.
The Patong Police told the Phuket Express that they reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed security staff and witnesses at the mall. Their inquiries quickly led them to the woman in question, who was found still inside the premises.
She was identified as a 32-year-old Thai woman employed at a bar on Bangla Road. Police noted that she has no permanent residence in Phuket. When questioned, she explained that her handwritten note, containing harsh language, was not truly intended as an insult to Thai people. Instead, she claimed she wrote it to deter anyone from stealing her bag, which she feared losing after experiencing two previous thefts.
Authorities explained that the woman’s actions were not motivated by hostility toward Thai citizens, contrary to the narrative spreading online. The clarification is to ease public concern and prevent further misunderstanding fueled by social media speculation.
