Phuket Officials Inspect Hebrew Signage Near Big Buddha After Online Debate

Phuket

Officials from Phuket Town District conducted an inspection at a restaurant near the Big Buddha in Chalong following widespread online discussion and concern about a Hebrew-language sign displayed at the entrance. Many of the concerned citizens even claimed that the signage could discriminate against Thais or other nationalities.

Officials told the Phuket Express that the inspection, carried out around 5:30 p.m., involved district administrators, local leaders, municipal officers from Chalong, and members of the territorial defense volunteer unit. The team reviewed the restaurant’s operations to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards.

Authorities confirmed that the establishment is registered as a legal entity under Thai ownership and operates with proper licenses. The restaurant employs 13 staff members, both Thai nationals and migrant workers, all of whom hold valid work permits. Drug testing conducted during the inspection yielded no violations.

Regarding the property, officials noted that the site is documented under Sor Kor 1 land papers, with further verification to be coordinated with relevant agencies. The restaurant specializes in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine and holds a valid license to sell alcoholic beverages.

The manager explained that the Hebrew signage was installed to assist international tourists, particularly those who use the language, in navigating the area. He pointed out that signs in various other languages, including Thai and English, were also present. He also made it clear that the restaurant welcomed everyone, wasn’t exclusive to Israelis and was not a “secret gathering spot” for Israelis as some claimed online.

Officials explained that monitoring will continue to ensure the business operates within the law, while also reassuring both residents and visitors of proper oversight in Phuket’s tourism zones.
