Phuket —
Authorities in Phuket on Thursday (March 26th) have launched a major operation to address forest encroachment and intimidation of local residents at Freedom Beach, a popular coastal area within the Nakkerd Mountain National Forest Reserve.
Acting on complaints from villagers who reported land seizures and threats from influential groups, Phuket Governor Nirut Laopongsitthathorn ordered a joint task force to investigate. The operation was led by Siwatch Rawangkul, District Chief of Mueang Phuket, accompanied by senior district officials, forestry officers, and local leaders.
During the inspection, officials discovered multiple violations:
• Illegal forest clearing and encroachment under the Forest Act.
• Unauthorized construction of houses, shops, and facilities within the reserve.
• Four elephants tethered in the area, raising concerns about animal welfare and possible commercial exploitation.

Legal proceedings are now being initiated against those responsible.
District Chief Rawangkul explained that the governor is deeply concerned for both the welfare of residents and the preservation of natural resources. He pledged strict enforcement of the law against forest invaders and influential groups, aiming to restore fairness and order in the area.
Local residents expressed distress, saying they have been unable to access their own land due to threats and the presence of armed individuals. They urged the government to act decisively to safeguard their livelihoods and ensure their safety.
