Phuket International Airport has moved to clarify the purpose behind newly installed taxi control signs, after images circulated online raised questions about public transport services at the facility.
Airport authorities told the Phuket Express that they stress that the measure is part of a broader effort to safeguard passengers, maintain order, and ensure fair access to authorized transport providers.
Regulating Transport Services Officials explained that the signs are intended to prevent unauthorized drivers from gathering in restricted areas to solicit passengers. Such activity, they noted, often leads to confusion and complaints, particularly when service providers are not registered with the airport. Without proper registration, passenger grievances cannot be effectively tracked or resolved.
The airport pointed out that passengers have access to a wide range of approved transport services, including:
- Limousines
- Metered taxis
- Public buses on several routes
- Car rental services
- Ride-hailing platforms such as Grab
These options, the airport stressed, are designed to give travelers flexibility and convenience.
To operate within the airport, transport providers must meet stringent requirements. Drivers undergo criminal background checks, vehicles and operators are registered, and service agreements are enforced. Violations can result in penalties, ensuring accountability and passenger protection.
Two ride-hailing companies, Bolt and inDriver, have already received licenses from the Department of Land Transport and are in the process of applying for permission to operate inside the airport. Phuket International Airport is currently assessing suitable service points for these platforms to ensure orderly operations and maximize passenger benefit.
