Phuket –
Kathu Municipality has once again brought its historic community to life with the opening of the 14th Kathu Cultural Street Festival, held from February 26–28, 2026.
The event was officially inaugurated by Mr. Teerapong Chuaychu, Deputy Governor of Phuket, at the central stage in front of Kathu Municipality, with local leaders, private sector representatives, residents, and media in attendance.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Governor stated that the festival’s continuity over 14 editions reflects both its success and the strong commitment to preserving cultural tourism in Kathu, one of Phuket’s oldest communities.
Known as the birthplace of the island’s first shrine and home to unique traditions, cuisine, and way of life collectively called “Vithi Nai Tu” (Life in Kathu), the festival shows the value of cultural heritage while creating jobs, income, and pride for the local community. He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s Soft Power policy, harnessing creativity and tradition to strengthen Thailand’s global appeal.

Mr. Wannayut Suttikul, Mayor of Kathu Municipality, reaffirmed the municipality’s dedication to supporting cultural tourism. He described the festival as a source of pride for Kathu residents and a living classroom for visitors eager to experience the community’s heritage. The event, he added, also stimulates the grassroots economy and reinforces community resilience.

The three-day celebration offers a rich variety of activities designed to evoke nostalgia and showcase Kathu’s identity:
- Photo spots with “Nong Bee Lan”, a beloved local mascot
- Street performances by busking artists
- Traditional Chinese costume photography at Kathu Shrine
- Sales of vintage toys and local crafts
- Performances of the ancient “Phu Cheng” instrument
- Rickshaw rides for elderly visitors, recreating the charm of bygone days
The festival is the result of work between government agencies, private businesses, and the local community. Together, they have created a platform for creative economy development, supporting local entrepreneurs and encouraging youth participation in cultural preservation.
Phuket Province invites both tourists and residents to join the 14th Kathu Cultural Street Festival from February 26–28, 2026, along Kathu’s Cultural Street. Under the theme “Community Life on the Cultural Street”, the event offers an immersive journey into the roots of Kathu through traditional food, performing arts, and local wisdom.
