Phuket –
Authorities in Phuket are stepping up public health and environmental safety measures to reinforce the island’s reputation as a leading tourism destination.
At the first meeting of the Phuket Provincial Public Health Committee for 2026, chaired by Deputy Governor Suwit Phansengiam, officials outlined new strategies to regulate festivals, control cannabis smoke nuisances, and prevent Legionnaires’ disease in hotels.
Key Measures Discussed
- Festival and Event Oversight
Organizers of festivals, trade fairs, and music events must obtain proper permits and comply with strict health and sanitation regulations. Activities classified as “markets,” “food distribution venues,” or “entertainment shows” will be closely monitored by local authorities to protect public health. - Cannabis Smoke Control
The committee considered designating “controlled nuisance zones” under the Public Health Act, allowing municipalities to restrict cannabis smoke and odors during major events. Violators would face penalties as stipulated by law. - Hotel Safety and Legionnaires’ Disease Prevention
With Phuket’s heavy reliance on tourism, officials discussed the need for hotels to conduct biannual testing for Legionella bacteria before license renewals. This measure is to reassure both domestic and international visitors of the island’s safety standards. - Food and Herbal Product Licensing
The meeting reviewed progress on licensing food distribution facilities in schools and regulating the sale and processing of controlled herbs, including cannabis, under the Thai Traditional Medicine Protection and Promotion Act. - Swiftlet Nest Industry Regulation
Participants acknowledged new Ministry of Public Health regulations classifying swiftlet nest harvesting and cleaning as hazardous activities requiring strict oversight of building hygiene, pollution control, and worker safety.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to integrating efforts across government agencies, local administrations, and private operators. The goal is to elevate Phuket’s public health governance to meet international standards, ensuring sustainable tourism growth while safeguarding community well-being.
