Phuket –
Kathu Municipality has announced the upcoming “Kathu Cultural Street Festival” (14th edition), an annual event designed to display the rich cultural heritage of Phuket and promote the province’s soft power.
The press conference, held at the municipal stage in front of Kathu Town Hall, was presided over by Phuket Governor Nirat Phongsitthithavorn, joined by Kathu District Chief Akkarapol Sutthirak Jitsuphap, Kathu Mayor Wannayut Sutthikul, representatives from the Phuket Provincial Cultural Office, law enforcement officials, private sector partners, and members of the local community.
Governor Nirat said that Phuket’s appeal extends far beyond its beaches and marine attractions. The province possesses invaluable cultural assets that deserve greater recognition and promotion. He noted that cultural tourism, rooted in identity, heritage, and local ways of life, serves as a vital mechanism for strengthening Phuket’s soft power, generating economic value while safeguarding traditions for future generations.

Mayor Wannayut added that Kathu Municipality is committed to supporting the province’s cultural tourism policy. The festival wants to instill pride among residents, while offering visitors an authentic opportunity to experience Kathu’s heritage “up close and personal.” He stressed that the event will also stimulate grassroots economic growth by empowering local entrepreneurs and artisans.
The three-day celebration will feature a wide range of activities, including:
- A photo zone with the beloved local mascot “Nong Bee Lan”
- Street performances and busking by local artists
- Traditional Chinese costume photography at the Kathu Shrine
- Sales of nostalgic toys and handicrafts
- Live performances of the phu cheng (Chinese zither)
- Rickshaw rides for elderly visitors

The festival is the result of close cooperation between government agencies, private businesses, and the local community. It provides a platform for creative economy initiatives, supports small enterprises, and encourages youth participation in preserving Kathu’s cultural legacy.
The “Kathu Cultural Street Festival” will take place from February 26–28, 2026 along Kathu Cultural Street, under the theme “Community Life on the Cultural Street.” Visitors will be invited to explore local cuisine, traditional performances, folk wisdom, and intergenerational storytelling, all designed to showcase the enduring charm of Kathu’s community.
