Russia Eyes Stronger Tourism Ties with Phuket, Proposes Direct Flights

PHUKET

Phuket welcomed a high-level Russian delegation this week as the province looks to deepen its ties with one of its largest tourist markets.

Governor Nirun Phongsitthavorn received Igor Ivanov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Phuket, along with representatives from Vladivostok, for discussions on expanding cooperation in tourism, culture, and economic development.

The meeting comes as Phuket continues to attract record numbers of Russian visitors, with more than one million arrivals recorded recently. The surge shows the island’s popularity among Russian travelers, particularly during the winter season when Phuket’s tropical climate offers an appealing escape.

During the talks, the Russian side expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation between government and private sectors in both countries. A key proposal was the introduction of additional direct flights between Phuket and Vladivostok, set for easing travel and supporting the growing demand during peak tourism periods.

Governor Nirun stressed Phuket’s commitment to building closer ties with Vladivostok, noting that long-term cooperation would benefit both sides not only in tourism but also in cultural exchange and economic opportunities. Plans for joint activities and exhibitions were discussed as ways to build deeper connections between communities.
