Phuket Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Cigarette Sales

Phuket

Officials carried out a major raid against illegal tobacco sales, seizing nearly 2,000 packs of contraband cigarettes and arresting a local shop owner.

Officials told the Phuket Express that during the raid, authorities arrested a 36-year-old man identified only as “Yae.” Officers confiscated 1,880 packs of untaxed cigarettes, 21,855 baht in cash, and a total of 33 items of evidence linked to the illegal trade.

The suspect faces charges under Thailand’s Excise Tax Act B.E. 2560 (2017) for possession and sale of goods without proper tax payment, as well as violations of the Customs Act for handling smuggled products. He was taken into custody and handed over to investigators at Chalong Police Station for legal proceedings.
