Phuket –
A rare and uplifting event unfolded on Phuket’s Karon Beach when a green sea turtle came ashore to lay 125 eggs on Karon Beach, marking a positive sign for the health of Thailand’s coastal ecosystem.
Officials from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) told the Phuket Express that they responded promptly after receiving reports from tourists and local lifeguards. Upon inspection, they discovered a single nest containing 125 eggs, each measuring about four centimeters in diameter.

Given the beach’s popularity as a tourist destination, authorities acted swiftly to relocate the eggs to a protected site. This precautionary measure aims to maximize hatching success and safeguard the young turtles from potential disturbances. Scientific samples were also collected to monitor health indicators, track disease risks, and support long-term conservation efforts.

“This nesting event is a strong indicator of the resilience and richness of our coastal environment,” DMCR officials noted. “It also reflects the importance of work between government agencies, local communities, and visitors in protecting Thailand’s marine heritage.”
Green sea turtles, classified as endangered, are rarely seen nesting on busy beaches. Their return to Karon Beach shows the effectiveness of ongoing conservation initiatives and highlights the balance between tourism and environmental stewardship.
