UPDATE: Speedboat Driver Tests Positive for Illegal Drugs After Fatal Collision in Krabi That Killed Young Russian Tourist

Police in Krabi have arrested a speedboat driver who tested positive for illegal drugs following a deadly collision with a fishing vessel that left one tourist dead and several others injured.

An 18 year-old female Russian teen has been pronounced dead while 18 foreigners have sustained various injuries after a speedboat collided with a local fishing vessel near the Phi Phi Island in Krabi.

Now for the update:

The Koh Phi Phi Police told the Phuket Express on Wednesday (January 14th) that the boat driver, identified only as Mr. Suriya, was taken into custody under a warrant issued by the Krabi Provincial Court.

According to police, he faces multiple charges including reckless operation of a vessel causing death and serious injury, as well as illegal use of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine).

Authorities confirmed that Mr. Suriya has been transferred to investigators at Koh Phi Phi Police Station, where legal proceedings are now underway.
