French Tourist Walking on Sidewalk Dies, Nine Vehicles Damaged in Phuket Drunk-Driving Crash – VIDEO

Phuket-

A French tourist was killed and nine vehicles damaged in a violent drunk-driving crash in central Phuket on Saturday afternoon (January 10th), raising fresh concerns over road safety in one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations.

Police told the Phuket Express that the accident occurred around 12:07 p.m. at the Bangkok–Phunphol intersection in Talad Nuea in Muang District. A gray Volvo driven by 51-year-old Thai national Mr. Jatupol lost control after colliding with several parked cars and motorcycles. The vehicle then mounted the sidewalk, striking French pedestrian Mr. Loic, before crashing into two more motorcycles.

Rescue teams rushed both men to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Mr. Loic later succumbed to his injuries, while the driver sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

Authorities confirmed that a blood alcohol test conducted at a local hospital showed Mr. Jatupol had a concentration of 265 milligrams percent, far above the legal limit. Investigators said he initially clipped six vehicles near before fleeing, only to cause further destruction at the busy intersection.

Police have charged Mr. Jatupol with multiple offenses, including:
• Driving under the influence causing death and property damage
• Failing to stop and render assistance after an accident
• Reckless driving endangering public safety

His Volvo has been seized as evidence.

In a statement, Phuket City Police expressed condolences to the victim’s family and pledged to pursue the case rigorously. “We will ensure justice is served and uphold the safety of all residents and visitors,” the statement read.
